My question was a step back from that; it was whether it is necessary to specify a particular syntax for them to be read and written in. If so, let there be ONE such syntax in the standard. If an implementation provides others, that's not a conformance issue. If not, all we need to say is that implementations must implement read/write invariance on all symbols, including those resulting from string->symbol.
